Farm-to-barrel brewing is about selecting the best in locally sourced fruit and blending it into beers inspired by the great brewing traditions of the world.  We aim to create something special and uniquely Northern Californian. Jesse and Damian collaborated to found the Almanac Beer Company—a brewery dedicated to producing seasonal artisan ales, brewed specifically to complement local cuisine sourced and prepared with the same great care and craft.

We came to the brewing world by way of homebrewing. For years in our respective San Francisco apartments we’d brew five gallon stove-top batches, developing a passion for crafting unique and unusual beers unavailable commercially. Using farmer’s markets as the launching pad for many unique homebrews, we knew right away we were on to something. We’ve taken that passion and adventurous spirit and decided to brew on a larger scale with the hope of sharing our vision with our community. Each harvest we partner with a different Northern California farm to supply the fruit used for our next brew. Every beer is a collaboration between us and the local terroir.

Blueberries are all about the color: that deep, luscious purple reminds us of summer blueberry cobbler, still-warm pie on a window sill and perfect blueberry muffins. We set out to capture that summer in a glass feeling in our barrels, and the result is this delicious beer.  We selected the very best hand-picked blueberries grown in Northern California and added them to oak barrels with our sour blonde ale.  Blended for a bright color, delicate fruit flavor, refreshing sourness and a touch of wine barrel oak. The resulting beer is infused with delicate blueberry essence, a reminder of long summer days.

Tangerine de Brettaville celebrates the flavors of citrus in beer.  We start by brewing a funky brettanomyces fermented base beer in large oak foeders, where the brett yeast creates farmhouse flavors and aromas.  We layer on California-grown tangerines and oranges for big citrus flavors, balancing tropical peel aromas and a hint of citrus bitterness.  Finally, we finish the beer with a generous dry hop of Citra, adding one more layer of citrus aroma to create a complex offering.  Pair with peking duck, orange chicken or walnut shrimp.

Citrus and beer have made a great pair ever since the first lemon wedge was added to a frosty wheat beer. Here we expand on that tradition, melding a sour blond ale with the intensely aromatic zest of Buddha’s Hand citrons and meyer lemons along with the bracing tartness of Yuzu and Blood Oranges from Hamada Farms. Pair harmoniously with sushi or flakey white fish or contrast with earthy roasted root vegetables.

Vanilla Cherry Dogpatch takes everything you love about our regular Dogpatch Sour and turns it up to 11. We started with our base red sour ale and added a ridiculous amount of Bing, Rainier and Montmorency Cherries to each barrel for a juicy, intense cherry flavor that exudes summer.  Then we added in whole Madagascar vanilla beans, building on oak’s natural vanilla flavor.  The final blend creates a delicate balance of fruit and oak that keeps you coming back for more.  Pair this summer sipper with game bird, fruit sauces and still-warm pie.
